Gabbehs
are coarsely-piled hand sponged woolen rugs on vegetable dyes
which were for everyday use on the floors of the tribal tents, with the
finer rugs and carpets, used for special occasions only.
Gabbehs were also used to wrap up children during the winter
nights. Their designs, like those of Kilims, represent the oldest in eastern
rug weaving and it is generally believed that the Gabbeh was the invention
of the Lors. |
Antique types: Today, any
discussion about the earliest Persian carpets must speak in terms of rarity,
partly because of the intentionally precious nature of those carpets. It is
no coincidence, for example, that all the surviving examples from the
Safavid era are now held in great collections. They can not be classified
according to production center with any certainly because identical models
were employed and circulated among many workshops. |

Rug of the Month: Fine
Tabriz Mahi: The ancient production center of Tabriz initiated
the 19th century revival of Persian carpet making. Tabriz carpets are
distinguished by the use of symmetrical knot (the asymmetrical was in use
during the Safavid period), the use of particularly coarse, strong wool, and
by the habit of trimming the pile to a meduim-low height.![]() |
